Over half of the people on Facebook said, seeing photos of themselves made them more conscious of their overall appearance, according to a recent study from the Center for Eating Disorders in Baltimore. Of those 50 percent, only a quarter of them were happy about the way they looked. Another survey of Facebook users under 40 revealed that the majority of people spent a significant amount of time comparing themselves to others. Of those who did, roughly a ⅓ said that it made them sad and roughly another ⅓ said they needed to change something about themselves. The survey also uncovered that people were more conscious of getting their photos taken because they were afraid that they might get posted. Finally, the majority of people were not happy with their bodies, nearly 75%, and a number had taken drastic measures to change, such as purging, and the like.
Facebook can be a powerful tool to connect, and it can be a very helpful tool in losing weight if you can re-engage with it in a positive way. If you spend more time thinking about what’s wrong with your body, you have less time to focus on the more positive realms of your life. This will impede your weight loss progress. What can you do?
Step 1: Recognize that you are making a change – If Sally or Sam looks great, it means you can too. They don’t hold a magic potion or secret. You may never be a supermodel, and that’s OK. Remember that you are doing this for yourself, not anyone else.
Step 2: Set up a circle of close, supportive, friends – We all know that we have Facebook “friends” and Facebook “confidants”. You may want to set up a smaller group of friends, who you know will be supportive, and share your weight loss journey with them. Group support is powerful; just make sure that you use it in the right way.
Step 3: It’s OK to disengage: Spend the 30 minutes that you would have spent on Facebook doing something active. Exercise is simply activity maintained over time.
