In lab tests Forskolin was shown to be able to stimulate fat burning in cells subjected to low levels of T3 and T4. Forskolin was also shown in the lab to be able to stimulate thyroid cells to release T3 and T4.
Forskolin increased fat burning in men.
A study published in 2005, showed that forskolin caused changes in the hormone levels and body composition in overweight and obese men. The objective of the study was to examine if forskolin increased fat burning, improved body composition, boosted testosterone levels, increased metabolism, and lowered blood pressure in men who were overweight or obese. The subjects were randomized in to two groups, placebo and forskolin, and followed for 12 weeks. The forskolin study was double-blinded so that the researchers and the participants did not know if the received forskolin or not.
The results showed that the forskolin group had an increase in fat burning and in lean body mass. There was a slight increase in the testosterone levels in the men receiving forskolin, which may account for the lean body mass improvements and fat burning effects. Although the effect were modest, the researchers reported that forskolin showed real promise.
Forskolin kept women from gaining weight
A study published in 2005, showed that forskolin caused changes in the body composition and is safe to use in mildly overweight women. The results showed that there were no significant differences in calorie intake, while the placebo group gained weight during the study, the forskolin group did not. In fact, there was a trend towards a reduction in body mass and fat mass in the forskolin group. Subjects in the forskolin group reported less fatigue, hunger, and more fullness. The forskolin group also did not report significant levels of side-effects.
Forskolin applied topically promoted fat burning under the skin
Three studies were performed by researchers at Johnson & Johnson Consumer group in France. They explored the effects of a topical cosmetic slimming product, which contained both forskolin.
In the first study, researchers tested effects of caffeine and forskolin on skin in the lab. They applied the compounds to the skin to observe their effects. Both caffeine and forskolin stimulated glycerol production in the skin. Glycerol production is the first step in fat burning, and an increase in glycerol production is a byproduct of fat burning.
The lab study was followed by a randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial where they measured the effect of the topical cream on body fat around the waist, thighs, buttocks, and other problem areas. They found that significant fat burning had occurred leading to reductions in body girth and cellulite. While one cannot definitely say that the results seen in a topical study proves an effect when the product is taken orally, it does add another data point of support.
