Exercise, Mental Stress, & Gender

A new study shows that coping with mental stress may be harder on a woman’s heart than a man’s.  According a study from Penn State’s College of Medicine, when given the same stressful problem, the heart rates of both men and women went up as did their blood pressure while solving it.  Normally, blood flow to the heart increases when blood pressure and heart rate rise because the heart has to work harder.  They found that this was true in men, but not in women.

These findings would suggest that women may be more likely than men to suffer heart problems after an emotional upset or some other mental stressor.  It also underscores that stress reduction is important for everyone, but it may be even more important for women.
