Exercising the Mind & Body Combats Age-Related Memory Loss

More and more data is surfacing that shows that moderate exercise and mental stimulation are key components to reducing the risk of age-related memory loss.  New research suggests that the combination of the two is better than either alone.  Any effort or movement requires energy, and energy requires the body to burn calories.  It becomes exercise, when this effort is maintained over time.  This may be a shift in thinking for some.

Most people view exercise as something you do at the gym, or as part of a daily routine outside.  In reality, exercise can be something as simple as cleaning the house, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking farther away from your destination so you have to walk a few extra minutes.  The fact is, anything that elevates your heart rate for a moderate amount of time, say 15-30 minutes a day, counts as exercise.  As for mental stimulation, there are a number of hobbies and activities one can enjoy.  Crossword puzzles, word games, spending time on the computer, reading, and others are all great ways to keep the brain sharp.  Taking time to connect with loved ones on the phone, via e-mail, or some other format can help as well.
