Drinking on a Diet? What Should You Do?

Drinking the Wrong Things Can Wreck Your Weight Loss Plan

When people try to lose weight, they rarely think about what they drink.  In fact, drinking the wrong things can totally wreck your weight loss attempt, while drinking the right things can increase your chances of success.

What to drink on a Weight Loss Plan:

  • Drink More Water

I hate to drink water too, but it is important.  In fact, a dieter should try to drink 8 glasses of water a day.  There is a school of thought that water can help you feel fuller.  This may work for some, but the jury is still out on this one.   Be that as it may, water is important to help your body function normally.  It helps you metabolize fat and removes waste.  It is calorie free, and an absolute must have.

  • Drink Green Tea

There is tons of data on the beneficial effects of green tea.  Green tea has been shown to boost the metabolism causing your to burn more calories.  It also is loaded with antioxidants which have been linked to beneficial effects to the body from lower cholesterol to reducing cancer risk.

  • Drink Milk, but not Whole or 2%

Milk is a good source of protein and calcium.  You can still get all the healthy benefits of milk if you drink 1% or Skim.  It may take a while to adjust to the flavor, but it’s definitely worth the switch from a calorie perspective.

Don’t Drink on a Weight Loss Plan:

  • Limit alcohol and regular sodas

Alcohol is incredibly calorie dense.  In fact, it packs almost as many calories per ounce as fat.  Nearly twice as much as proteins and carbohydrates.  If you do choose to drink, do it in moderation.  Know that shots of distilled alcohols, vodka, rum, and the like, are roughly 100 calories.  Two or three can easily be more than a meal, especially if you mix them.  Beer and wine are roughly 150 calories a bottle or glass.   Regular sodas are loaded with sugar, and they are calorie dense.

  • Put extras in the coffee or tea

Coffee and tea can be fine.  Caffeine has been shown to have a positive effect on weight loss.  However, that benefit can be completely lost if you fill your coffee and tea with a ton of sugar, milk, and/or cream.  Sweeteners and lightener can pack a calorie punch.  Choose alternatives such as low-calorie sweetener, like Equal, Splenda, or Sweet & Low, and use skim milk in lieu of cream if you need to use a lightener at all.

  • Drink fruit juices from concentrates

If you choose to drink juice, make sure that it is fresh juice.  It will say on the label.  Concentrates tend to have added sugars, which drives up the calories needlessly.
