Let’s face it, no matter how fun we try to make it, exercise is work, and we all get lazy and make excuses. The focus of these posts is to tackle some of those excuses head on and provide you with ways to overcome them. This is the second post of a three part series.
2nd Most Popular Exercise Excuse: “I’m Tired”
Believe it or not, exercise can boost your energy. That’s not to say that you should go run a marathon, but it is to say that there are probably some simple exercises that you can do at home or at the gym that aren’t terribly taxing, but can get your heart rate up. Crashing on the couch will only make you feel worse. Playing with your kids, walking the dog, heck, walking in place while you watch TV can even help. I’ve always found that putting the gym between my house and my work forced me to go even when I didn’t want to do it. The simple reminder of having to drive or walk past it can encourage you to go. Agree to spend only 15-30 minutes, and if you are still tired, then you can quit.
Alternatively, if the work day is what is dragging you down, you can try the mornings or during your lunch break. Ah…then, you say that “you don’t have time” – see our Part 1. The truth is that you can find time.
3rd Most Popular Exercise Excuse: The kids
“I can’t get away from the kids”, you may say. To which, I say, great. Kids can be the best form of exercise out there. Playing is exercise, simply put. When you’re at the playground, play with them. Swing on the swings. Play tag. Run around. All of this is exercise. If you drive them to school, can you find a way to walk some portion or all of it? If you’re at their games, can you walk while they wrap-up or practice? If you are stuck inside, can you find ways to build in active games such as, Wii® or X-Box Kinect® or simple things like hide and seek? Fitness isn’t just good for you. It’s great for your kids.
