Heart problems, once only an issue of adults and seniors, are increasingly becoming issues for teens and young adults.
Major Factors: Weight, Diet, & Exercise
There are a number of factors, but these three: being overweight, inactivity, and eating a poor diet are thought to be the key factors. In a recent report from the CDC (U.S. Centers of Disease Control & Prevention) reported that 20% of children have abnormal cholesterol levels. This sparked a new set of guidelines for the American Academy of Pediatrics. They recommend cholesterol screening for all children ages 9 and up.
Obesity Causes the Problems
Obesity is what is driving these issues. Obesity doesn’t care how old you are, just how long you’ve been overweight. Nearly one in three kids today is overweight and obese, according to the CDC, and one in five is obese. Given these levels, we can expect to see health related issues due to obesity manifest themselves earlier in life.
Best Cure? Parents to Lose Weight.
The best thing to do for an overweight child is for their parents to take a hard look in the mirror. The vast majority of overweight kids have overweight parents. The single most effective thing that an overweight parent can do for their child is to lose weight themselves. Children do best when led by example. Although children, like adults, can take medication to bring down their cholesterol levels, why risk life-long exposure to drugs, which have serious, known side-effect, which tend to be linked to the duration you are on them.
