An Australian study followed a group of more than 900 elementary school age children, ages 7 to 12, over a four year period. They found a direct connection between the hours a child slept, and their weight. The children who got the most sleep, were the least likely to be obese compared to those who did not. The difference was small, 5 pounds, but significant. This is still important because as the body grows, fat cells develop. Once they are there, all you can do is make them shrink.
Sleep helps regulate our hormones. Not getting enough sleep seems to create an imbalance between the hormones controlling hunger and fullness. When these are out of balance, we tend to over eat.
