A study conducted by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) showed that the U.S. could save nearly $30 billion in 5 years, $150 billion in 10 years, and a whopping $600 billion in 20 years, if the U.S. could reduce the obesity rate by only 5%.
More than ½ of all Americans live with a chronic disease. Many of which are related to weight and physical inactivity, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. The New York Academy of Medicine reviewed a number of clinical studies and concluded that, community-based programs were effective in reducing obesity and obesity related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and some forms of cancer. The American Heart Association concluded in their own review that, cardiovascular problems can be prevented or at least delayed until old age through physical activity and diet. Interestingly, they found that every $1 spent on bike trails and walking paths reduced medical expenses by $3. They also found that, changes in diet and activity reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by nearly 60%, which is twice as high as commonly used drugs. The list goes on.
