There is new evidence linking resveratrol with the slowing of cellular aging. Resveratrol is a compound found in red wine, and it has been linked to a number of health promoting benefits, such as weight loss, heart health, and others. This study explored the effects of a particular gene called SIRT1.
SIRT1 plays a role in proper function of the cell. In animals, which carry the normal SIRT1 gene, resveratrol boosted mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are the power plants of the cell. Decreases in mitochondrial function have been linked to a number of diseases, which include diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and general aging itself. Unfortunately, the levels required to see this effect required the equivalent of drinking 100 glasses of red wine a day. Researchers are instead trying to find a way to concentrate resveratrol, which does not alter its properties.
Previous studies have shown a link between resveratrol and anti-aging. However, the precise mechanism is unknown. Many believe that SIRT1 plays a role, but definitive proof is lacking.
