Vitamin C may Lower Blood Pressure

If you an interested in eating healthy, you may want to add an orange or two to your day.  The results of a large review study, researchers pooled the data from nearly 30 studies and over 1,400 adults.  500 milligrams of vitamin C a day was the average amount that the study participants consumed for over an average 8 week period.  People who had high blood pressure, saw a drop in their systolic (top number) blood pressure drop by nearly 5 points, and the bottom, or diastolic number, dropped by about 2 points.

This research suggests that vitamin C may provide a modest reduction in blood pressure.  However, more data is needed in order to understand the implications of taking high level supplements of vitamin C.

There have been studies in the past which have shown benefits to vitamin C, which were not confirmed when tested in clinical trials.  One can recommend adding more fruits and vegetables, especially red pepper, oranges, grapefruits, and kiwi, are the best dietary sources of this antioxidant-rich vitamin.
